THE HISTORY OF NORTH FARM NURSERY

North Farm Nursery began in the 1980s, when Allan and Tracey Hutchings started growing material taken from cuttings for sale in local markets. From there they expanded the business to supply local retailers including greengrocers, newsagents, garden centres etc., as well as landscapers, wholesalers and other nurseries nationwide; taking on more staff and investing into new glass, equipment and infrastructure to meet these requirements.

In recent years, investment has continued with existing facilities being upgraded and new ones created to deal with increasing demand. In 2016, Allan and Tracey’s son Adam became a partner in the business having worked as part of the team for 8 years after leaving college, and has worked to expand the production of our main Phormium crop.

We now have a team of 10 permanent staff supplemented by seasonal workers during summer months, working over 5 acres of glass and poly-tunnels across 2 sites to produce over 1,000,000 plants each year, with some of our crops even making their way into Europe. Our hope is to continue to build on our reputation of providing a reliable supply of high quality plants and cement ourselves as one of the UK’s foremost production nurseries.

NORTH FARM NURSERY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

With the need to be environmentally responsible greater than ever, we strive to take that responsibility seriously. We have on site a 50kw solar photovoltaic array which supplements our electricity supply with green energy; and through the use of recyclable plastics, biological pest controls and committing to increasing our use of peat- free compost, we hope to reduce our impact on the environment.

In addition to the eco friendly measures above we also try to maintain our immediate surroundings to the benefit of local wildlife. We have small areas of open water, marshland, woodland, set-aside land and wild flowers to provide natural habitats and encourage biodiversity.
